Objective: In this study, the anti-microbial effects of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), chlorhexidine, and polymer-combined CPC were compared as a bioactive component of dentifrices.
Methods: Hydroxyapatite disks were coated with 1% mucin for 30 minutes and then OD (optical density) values were meas-ured in order to compare the antimicrobial effects of CPC, chlorhexidine and polymer-combined CPC.
Results: The OD values of chlorhexidine and polymer-combined CPC treated sample showed statistically significant anti-microbial effects compared with CPC in dentifrices (p£¼0.05). Especially, polymer-combined CPC showed most effective for inhibition of Streptococcus mutans.
Conclusion: The antimicrobial activity of CPC was enhanced by combining polymer in dentifrices.
